These are times of economic hardship, especially across the Global South and disproportionately in island nations. The communities of these nations are the ones shepherding our oft-forgotten reef and marine ecosystems, which together sequester over 30 Billion tonnes of carbon, and are a key part of our global fight to battle climate change.
COMMUNITIES IN PERIL
With a stark choice between putting food on the table through destructive economic choices (dynamite fishing, working in extractive industries), these communities have no choice but to sideline our fragile reef ecosystems. The pandemic has virtually eliminated for these nations the travel and tourism to support sustainable economic development.
CREATING ECONOMIC ALTERNATIVES
Scuba and free diving communities worldwide have untold treasures of stories, videos, photos, and creations that celebrate our global reefs. Worldwide digital transformation has enabled an opportunity for collective commercialization, in part because the pandemic has unleashed a global digital e-commerce connectivity like never before in history.
